Using a chest strap. one of the main reasons I chose the VA3 was so I could continue to use a chest strap. I can get the strap connected to the watch but it doesn’t stay that way during the workout, buzzes “connected” multiple times and uses the wrist hrm instead, which is just so inaccurate. Am I missing something?

Garmin Run works with Vivoactive 3, I tried that. But you won't get advanced metrics from it (only heart rate), so it makes no sense to buy it if you don't plan to get a fully compatible device in the future. I sent it back and now use the garmin premium hr strap, don't know if that's the international name (maybe Google GARMIN19HW30001).
